UK Transport Investment: The Spending Review settlement announced on Tuesday 18 July by Chancellor Gordon Brown sees transport capital investment rise from GBP2,332 million for 2000-01 to GBP6,176 million for 2003-04 with total spending rising from GBP5 billion in 2000-01 to over GBP9 billion in 2003-4 (an average annual increase of 20 per cent in real terms over the three years to 2004).

The Spending Review funds the first three years of the 10 Year Transport Plan, due to be launched on Thursday by the Deputy Prime Minister.

Although this review covers all forms of transport it is significant that the DETR press release mentions "a significant increase in light rail use in our cities".
