URBAN TRANSIT NEWS

Denver extension opens: The first extension to Denver's 5.3 mile light rail line opened at 1pm on Friday 14th July with free travel for the whole weekend up to midnight on Sunday. The new 8.7 mile southwest extension cost USD 178 million and runs along South Santa Fe Drive from Broadway to West Mineral Avenue in Littleton, with stops at West Evans, Hampden, Oxford and Mineral avenues and downtown Littleton.

There will be a 10 minute service in peak hours with 15 minutes at other times. Expectations are for 8 500 daily rides initially, rising to 22 400 per day by 2015. There are some concerns that there will not be sufficient parking spaces along the line although there are some 25 feeder buses to assist in bringing riders to the line.
