Siemens' Combino for Melbourne: Swanston Trams of Melbourne, part of the National Express Group, announced on 16 March that it was placing an order with Siemens for 59 air-conditioned Combino low-floor trams for delivery from 2002. The trams will come from the Uerdingen factory in Germany, but will have 20% local content by value. Swanston Trams operate 17 routes in Melbourne under a 12-year franchise running from 29 August 1999. Siemens will also build 62 three-car EMUs for Bayside Trains, an NEG subsidiary.
