San Francisco - F Line to Fisherman's Wharf starts service:
Saturday 4th march 2000 saw the start of the Municipal Railway's (MUNI) regular service on the extension to the historic streetcar F line from Market and Castro, via the Downtown to Fisherman's Wharf.

The F line extension cost some USD80 million and took five years to complete. Previously the approximately 3 and 1/2 miles (5.6 kilometres) line, which begins at Castro and Market, ended at the Transbay Terminal. It now continues for a further 2 and 1/2 miles (4 kilometres) via the northern waterfront to terminate at Jones and Beach, giving a total length of approximately 6 miles (9.6 kilometres).

The line is operated by two types of historic streetcars, PCC cars of 1940's vintage from Philadelphia and 1928 Peter Witt cars from Milan. Also, in addition to these, the Municipal Railway's "vintage" fleet, including Car 1 (built in 1912), 130 (built in 1914), ex-Melbourne 496, ex-Blackpool "Boat" 226, etc. are used in regular service on the F-Line from time to time. Because of unexpectedly heavy ridership on the extension, cars 1, 130 and 496 are being used almost daily on as extra "shuttle" cars between the Ferry Building at the foot of Market Street and Fisherman's Wharf.
