New light rail study: The DETR has commissioned consultants MVA to carry out a review of light rail systems to come up with recommendations on how European experience can be applied in the UK context, and how light rail can contribute to the success of Local Transport Plans and other Government policy objectives. MVA will work in association with European consultants TTK (Karlsruhe) and SYSTRA (Paris). The work will assess the success of both light rail systems and associated complementary measures in meeting overall transport objectives.

A separate study into the relative merits of bus lanes, guided buses, busways and light rail systems has been carried out by consultants Environmental and Transport Planning, led by Professor Carmen Hass-Klau, which is due to be submitted in March.
