Bordeaux progress:
Following the grant of its 'declaration of public utility' on 26
January, work will start this spring on the new tramway system in
Bordeaux, with the aim of opening the first section for public service
in 2002. On 7 February the city announced that it had chosen a
consortium led by Alstom as the preferred bidder to design build and
maintain the system. Other consortium members are Spie Enertrans for the
electrification, Cogifer for the track and Fayat Entreprise for the
civil engineering. Alsom will deliver 38 Citadis low-floor trams, with
an option for 32 more.
The consortium has offered the option of ground electrification rather
than overhead; the municipality will decide on this later (Spie
Enertrans are behind the trials with the 'third rail' current pick up at
Marseille).
